What If?

13 Dec

What if that guy who jumped over the fence at the White House, eluded the Secret Service and made it all the way into the lobby, had done so when the President and his family were there and then had found his way up to the residence and then been shot dead by the President who was defending his family from the madman?

How long do you think it would have been before the Republican Congress had investigated, indicted and impeached President Obama and then sued him for the murder of an American citizen?

Or perhaps they would have hailed our president as the model home owner defending his family, 2nd Amendment rights, and the American way?

Which do you think it would have been?

This is really too much…that’s all I can say.

Based on the Presidents stance on apologizing for Americas violent actions around the world, I would think he would be hiding under the bed.

Why do I have a sneaky feeling he would be impeached before he could say what happened

I have yet to see the Second Amendment folks lauding the rights of African-Americans to have guns. As best I can tell from the news, if it even looks like an African-American may be armed, law enforcement immediately guns him down, even if he’s armed with a toy gun, a pill bottle, or no gun at all. If the past is any predictor, I’d say that the Secret Service would have to swoop in to protect the inhabitants of the White House, see an armed black man and immediately dispatch him without even blinking. There’d be no impeachment, just an immediate investigation and a determination that either Biden was behind it, or it was another act in furtherance of the Benghazi conspiracy. The NRA would then make the unfortunate Secret Service shooter their Man of the Year.

I believe that every homeowner, bad president or not, has the right to defend their family. Even with the use of lethal force. I also believe that the main issue pursued in that scenario would be who would be the next person in charge of White House security.

I think you laid out the whole frightfully ugly side of an American reality.
It seems to me that for all our posturing for human rights throughout the world, we have no idea anymore of what that means in practice.
We have exchanged, willingly, without a whimper of revolt, those rights for a cheap sparkling Tshirt at the mall. A bit reductionist, but given time and space I could defend that opinion.
Thank you for being indignant and encouraging reflection.

IMO – absolutely nothing would happen as he would be defending from an intruder in his own home. I don’t think people should try to rouse a race issue where there isn’t even a hint of one. The more the race card is pulled – the more people react negatively toward it – it only serves to hurt the issue – not help.

I think it’s interesting that some of your commenters thought immediately of Obama not as a man, or as “the president”, but as a black man, or “the black president”, and they assumed your intent was to bring a Ferguson-ish slant to your poser.

That wasn’t my read at all.

Their responses took me by surprise, because your question had taken me by surprise for another reason entirely. I had planned to ask you this:

What the heck kind of wing are you, Glenn, right or left? For this post made it sound to me as if your point was that Obama would certainly be justified in that case in defending himself and his family against that stranger’s home invasion, and lucky to have the means with which to do it. If that were your point, though, it would seem at odds with your liberal stance on other matters.

It’s been so long since I visited here, I couldn’t recall other posts you’ve written related to guns…

My answer is, neither A nor B. There would be a cover-up, with The People being told that a Secret Service agent had shot the intruder.

Rich, good-looking people always get away with murder.

My point here was that what a conundrum this scenario would have presented to the Republicans. The hate and oppose everything President Obama says and does (and his family too) but they love guns and defending one’s home and honor, so which way would they go here?

I agree it would be a poser–for SOME Republicans. Not all Republicans are the ones (the only ones) portrayed in the media. We should ALL take care to use SOME. I know I should.
