Riderless colt Bodexpress races in Preakness without jockey

Why cancel the Kentucky Derby? Do we really need to pack the stands at Churchill Downs with wealthy, crazy hat wearing, mint julep drinking fans? Do the horses really need diminutive human riders sitting atop their majestic equine frames?

Can’t we just line them up at the starting line and ring the starting bell and…they’re off!

All of us sports crazed, sports craving and sports deprived fans could place our bets from home on our computers and then watch on television to see what happens.

Where will the horses go? Will they run around the track as they’ve been trained? Without a rider? Will they hang out for a while and say hello to one another. Will they run amok, here and there or where ever? Try to find the barn? Munch lazily on some grass if they can find any.

This race could take minutes or hours or??? Who knows? But Americans everywhere could watch for however long it takes, fixed in their seats at home anticipating a conclusion and a big pay day should their horse cross the finish line first. And no matter the odds each horse would probably have an equal chance to make it around the track and back to where they started all by themselves…shouldn’t they?

I’m sure the true racing fan and horse aficionado could tell me if I have a clue as to how horses would behave under a riderless circumstance and I know that a thoroughbred race horse is highly trained and loves to run but…we’ve got to watch something don’t we?

So let them run for the roses…or the hills?

I think the American sports fan is just about reading to watch anything!

How will we know?

10 Apr

Sunrise over a stadium

How will we know when this Corona virus crisis is over?

When will we be absolutely sure that it is safe to go out and about in public again?

When the politicians say so? When the doctors say so? When the Employers say so?

No. I believe that we will know when it is finally and truly safe again to run and play and shop and dine and congregate and mingle among one another when the athletes say so…and by that I mean when the PROFESSIONAL athletes say so.

Almost all of today’s professional athletes are millionaires and almost all of today’s professional sports team owners are billionaires and as such have access to their own professional doctors, lawyers, nutritionists, specialists of all kind and manner, and no doubt, medical test kits too! (of all kind and form… no doubt either)

No professional athlete will take to the field or court or rink or arena or stadium and jeopardize their livelihood, fame, fortune, family and health without the say so and approval of their entire entourage. And no owner will open his or herself up to class action lawsuits by exposing thousands of fans to their prized athletes (not to mention to one another) and become responsible for creating another pandemic… unless they are 100 % absolutely, positively, certifiably sure that it is safe to do so.

So when you hear the words “Play Ball!” and actually see the professionals playing ball then you will know that it’s safe to go “back in the water” or anywhere else that you want to go. Until then I say we’re all on our own as to what we want to do, or think we can do, even after the “authorities” give us the all clear.

So beware, be safe, Good luck and Godspeed to everyone! Keep your distance and protect yourself and loved ones as best you can. And big thanks to all of those who make the great sacrifice of caring for the stricken in hospitals and healthcare facilities around the country and thanks also to those who are still working in essential jobs on a daily basis while millions of us can only stay at home…and wait….and wait.

I’m Going to Kansas City…Or Am I?

7 Feb

The Kansas City Chiefs just won the Super Bowl! And they’re going to…Kansas?

Well, no…but that’s where the President of the United States thinks they’re from, as you can see from his congratulatory tweet following the big game and the Chief’s victory.

He has since deleted the tweet because even though there is a Kansas City in Kansas, that’s not the Kansas City where the Kansas City Chiefs play. They play in the Kansas City that is in Missouri. And as you can imagine he took a lot of criticism for not knowing the difference.

But that’s an honest mistake isn’t it? After all, did you know where Kansas City was? Or that there were 2 Kansas City(s)…one in Missouri and the other in Kansas? And that the Missouri Kansas City was the BIG Kansas City where the sports teams play?

Well, maybe if you’re a child and didn’t pay attention in school or don’t pay attention to sports or geography or you just aren’t curious about such things but what if you’re a grown adult in your 70’s and… PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES???

Hey, anybody can make a mistake. Right? President Trump has since deleted his tweet and replaced it with an accurate one that congratulates Missouri and even though he looked silly and took a lot of flack for being so uninformed a lot of folks came to his defense like Fox and Friends who said that mixing up the 2 Kansas Citys was like congratulating New Jersey when The New York Giants win and even the Kansas House read his tweet aloud in their chambers and applauded his official and Presidential congratulations to Kansas, for as the Governor of Kansas (a Democrat) said, “We root for the Chiefs too!”

And Matt Schlapp, the chairman of the American Conservative Union had this to say when he tweeted:

@mschlapp
Dear East coast establishment: Kansas City, Kansas is in Kansas.

But what bothers me is that now I’m supposedly part of the “East Coast Establishment”,
because I dare to know things…and at times correct others who don’t…and verifiable
facts are important to me. And here in the 21st century that makes me an elitist, liberal,
who do I think I am, know it all.
So be it.
But what bothers me most is that our President is a man who says that he does know it
all. He is someone who likes to point out everyone’s flaws and he mocks them for having
them. He condemns those he disagrees with. He publicly speculates on whose souls he
believes rot in hell or are exalted in heaven. He defends himself by ordering others to
proclaim that he is right even when he knows that they know that he is wrong…
and those are all things that all of us were taught…once upon a time…were wrong. I believe they still are.
In conclusion, here is a video from the Super Bowl party attended by President Trump during the playing of our country’s National Anthem. The Anthem about which our President proclaimed every American “should stand proudly for” when played, otherwise they should forever be branded a “son-of-a-bitch” unworthy of employment in any respectable American enterprise.

https://www.miamiherald.com/news/politics-government/article239918518.html

So I propose that in the future should you decide that you have a grievance or complaint or injustice that you would like to protest during the playing of our National Anthem don’t kneel or sit or even remain silent. Rather I propose that you simply do the right thing and act as respectfully as our POTUS acts during this most solemn of anthems.

Wave your arms wildly and grandly in the air as any amateur conductor would. Then point to your friends (or foes) with your finger guns to emphasize that you are here and proud and should be paid attention to. Then shuffle about as though you have ants in your pants and can’t be stilled because there are more important things to be worried about besides anthems.

You know…shake your sillies out…and simply act…Presidential!

That should get you some attention for your cause…without having to upset people by being all establishment and East Coast elitist like.

Yes, It’s always good to be the king! So maybe we should just start emulating him whenever we need to get our point across to his adoring subjects?

Image result for president trump golfing

So far in the almost 2 1/2 years of his presidency, President Trump’s golf habit has cost American taxpayers 102 million dollars in extra travel and security expenses, and soon he will achieve a new milestone: a seven-figure presidential visit to another country so he can play at his own course…over there.

According to recent non-partisan studies, U.S. taxpayers have spent 81 million dollars for the president’s two dozen trips to Florida,  17 million dollars for his 15 trips to New Jersey, another $1 million so he could visit his resort in Los Angeles and at least $3 million for his two days in Scotland last summer ― $1.3 million of which went just for rental cars for the entourage that accompanies a president abroad.

And according to the Irish media and government sources, the White House has done preliminary work for The President’s visit to his  resort on the west coast of Ireland next month even though no official meeting with Irish leaders is planned while there.

And should we mention that the 102 million total dollars to date spent on his presidential golfing represents 255 times the annual presidential salary he volunteered not to take?!

And should we mention that It is 3 times more more than the cost of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation that he continually complains about being such an incredible waste of money…

And should we add that It would also fund the Special Olympics program that his proposed budget had originally cut in order to save the government money… for the next 6 years!

And should we dare to mention that President Trump, who was a frequent critic of former President Barack Obama for his “disgraceful” golf outings,  has spent more than twice as many days on the links, to date, as President Obama did at the same point in his first term…and at a cost of more than 3 times as much by the same point in President Obama’s term?

And because Our President only plays at golf courses that he owns, most of that tax payer money being spent on his golfing habit…goes to him! In fact, A U.S. recent GAO report (Government Accountability Office) found that Mar-a-Lago received approximately $60,000 in just the four visits it studied…and he’s made 24!

And all of this is from the president who promised that he would be too busy draining the wasteful, do-nothing, incompetent government swamp to be able to play any golf, should he ever be elected President of the United States. Then candidate Trump repeatedly promised that golf would never make it onto a President Trump schedule.

“I love golf, but if I were in the White House, I don’t think I’d ever see Turnberry again. I don’t think I’d ever see Doral again,” he told a rally audience in February of 2016.  “I don’t ever think I’d see anything. I just want to stay in the White House and work my ass off.”

President Trump reneged on that pledge within two weeks, and since then he has spent a total of 61 days on his Florida courses, 58 at Bedminster in New Jersey, one at Trump National Golf Club in Los Angeles and two at Trump Turnberry, for a golfing average of 1 in every 5th day of his presidency on the gold course.

That’s a lie of 5 over par! Or as our President would characterize it: “A hole in 1!”

Nice work if you can get it…and boy are we getting it! Fore!!!!!

That’s How We Do: Juxta-Posers

7 Feb

Just thought I’d repost this from a few years ago after listening to Lawrence O’Donnell today and The POTUS yesterday speak about Socialism and how we (The USA) will never, ever be a socialist country in any way shape or form…

Today I took a drive to the Philadelphia airport and on the drive home, thanks to major construction and the worn out, pot-holed, crumbly highway, I was forced to a crawl just as I passed the relatively new South Philadelphia Stadium Complex. Where the Philadelphia Phillies, Eagles and Flyers play.

I couldn’t help but notice how shiny and new and spectacular the stadiums looked…however I also couldn’t help but notice that the names on the stadiums were Citizens Bank Park Stadium, Lincoln Financial Field and The Wells Fargo Center. And I also couldn’t help but notice that the surrounding neighborhoods were about as shiny and new and spectacular as the interstate highway  that I was traveling on.

And that got me to wondering…Why do we almost always put sports stadiums in the worst parts of big cities where then millions of people have to travel from the suburbs to spend millions of dollars to watch millionaires play? Probably you’ll say it’s so we can get all of that money that is being spent back into the cities…but that’s just not the case

Most if not all of these stadiums are financed by the crumbling cities themselves rather than by the wealthy teams and owners and financial institutions that have their names on them. And even though banks like Wells Fargo and  Citizens bank and Lincoln Financial pay millions for the naming rights, when you consider the recent trillions of dollars spent by the federal government in bailing out these banks then just about all of the money spent on these ballparks comes from…the citizens…not banks.

 That’s just plain crazy.

Many politicians and proponents of these publicly financed stadiums argue that new stadiums bring new jobs and economic expansion but when new sport stadiums are financed with public money, all research has shown that the population is actually worse off economically than before the stadium.

In fact arenas and stadiums rarely live up to the promises teams, owners, and city politicians use to justify their construction. Cities are often left holding unsustainable amounts of debt because the economic development that is promised never shows up, and as a result, other services that provide more benefit to taxpayers like new roads and bridges and jobs and boring things like that are slashed to pay the bills.

Which when you think about it is insane.

Almost 40 years ago my home state of New Jersey borrowed $302 million to  construct  the Meadowlands and was supposed  to pay off the bonds in 25 years. Today because of refinancing, and redirecting funds for other stadiums the authority that runs the Meadowlands owes $830 million…on a stadium that was just torn down.

That’s nuts!

Did you know that according to a new study from Harvard: when public-private partnerships are used to build such stadiums, taxpayers finance more than three-quarters of the investment, with teams and owners picking up just 22 percent of the tab…And every NFL franchise is today worth over 1 billion dollars!

It’s so ridiculous that it’s unbelievable!

And while our cities and infrastructures are crumbling around us we are cheering ourselves up by yelling, screaming and cavorting in the midst of abject poverty on urban oases as green as the piles of cash we spend there, named after banks that wouldn’t lend us a dollar under the very same deals and interest rates that they broker to build these coliseums.

Shouldn’t we  really be building these monuments to fame and fortune in the places where they belong like Beverly Hills, Wall Street and Fort Knox?

It’s so ridiculous that it defies explanation…

But after all…that’s just how we do…isn’t it?

The NFL and SOBs

25 Sep

Image result for the first amendment protects the right to

According to the most recent Nielsen data, NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” in the first two weeks of the regular season is down 7% in viewership compared to last year, while ESPN’s “Monday Night Football,” is down 5% and the averages of Sunday afternoon games on Fox and CBS are down 11% and 19% respectively

And President Donald Trump thinks that he knows the reason why because he tweeted this: “NFL ratings are down massively, Now, the No. 1 reason happens to be that they like watching what’s happening…with yours truly.”

Wow! Our POTUS believes that people…up to 19% more, would rather watch him than football! But to be fair he also tweeted that NFL viewership is down because NFL players don’t hit each other hard enough anymore and that has made the games boring. Too much safety and not enough entertainment.

He also said that the players who protest by kneeling during the National Anthem have disrespected America to the point where no one wants to watch their games anymore and he tweeted: “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now, out, he’s fired!’ … They’ll be (the owner) the most popular person, for a week. They’ll be the most popular person in the country.” (our president puts a high premium on popularity)

President Trump however is also the president who said that Neo-Nazis and white supremacists who marched in Virginia had a permit and the right to free speech under the first amendment of our Constitution… And he did not call them sons of bitches either… But he did point out that those who protested against the Neo/WS and did so violently, were just as bad as any neo-nazis… but only the bad ones.

So why is an NFL protester who quietly takes a knee during our National Anthem a son of a bitch who should lose his job, while a white supremacist neo nazi who shouts “blood and soil” and “no more Jews” while carrying a torch and marching en masse, is protected by the First Amendment and his permit?

By our president’s own logic he is just as bad as an NFL player because he has violently spoken out in protest against NFL protesters!…and as a consequence should lose his job? Unless of course he is protected by the First Amendment too and or has/had a permit to tweet/speak? Plus, I don’t think he has a boss who could fire him anyway.

But seriously folks, doesn’t he have anything better to do? Like Presidenting? Is it really important who has better ratings? The President and All 32 NFL franchises are worth over 1 billion dollars. Someone must be watching. Is this a TV show or a sovereign nation we’re living in?

And finally…We do actually have a first Amendment in this country! Which says: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

That’s why we have protests and quarrels about religious differences and public grievances and news, both real and fake (unfortunately) It’s FREEDOM! And you may freely express yourself, WITHOUT HAVING TO WORRY ABOUT LOSING YOUR JOB! or BEING CALLED A SON OF A BITCH! OR GETTING RUN OVER BY A CAR!

By-the- way…Being PEACEABLE,  (inclined to avoid argument or violent conflict) is the operative word in that amendment.

So get over it America… and Mr. President…and PLAY BALL!… Peaceably… (except for the part about where the President wants NFL players to hit each other more often and more violently…but just for ratings, and entertainment, and not to be so boring…you understand?)… I swear you just can’t make this stuff up anymore!

Our New National Anthem?

15 Nov

I propose this song as the United States new National Anthem! The Star Spangled Banner is so old and out dated and no one can remember all of the words anyway… and it’s too long. And this song that I propose is modern and with a beat plus it captures America’s conflicted and new mood… and it has so few words that everyone can remember them and sing along.

Remember when you were young and your heart was an open book?…Of course you do…

And you probably used to say things like “Live and let live.” Especially to your parents…You know you did.

But the world has changed and now we all say. “Live and let die.”… You know we do.

And it’s even got loud music, crescendos, bombs bursting and fireworks!

So what do you say America? Let’s change our National Anthem. Isn’t it time we did?

Really, What does it matter ? It’s just a song we sing at ball games.

Common! Wouldn’t you just love to sing this song out loud and clear…

and give the other fella hell!

You know you do!
