Don’t Fear the Reaper?

15 Oct
Eczema and Health Insurance | Help with Eczema Prescription Costs

Isn’t it ironic that as our President of the United States is recovering from his recent bought with the Coronavirus at the White House in Washington D.C. receiving the best treatment for his illness that is humanly available to him, his most recent Supreme Court nominee is waiting to be approved and sworn in by a completely partisan Republican Senate majority in their latest best effort to completely destroy and eliminate the Affordable Care Act from U.S. Law?

Make no mistake about it. Judge Amy Coney Barrett has been nominated for the Supreme Court of the United States because President Trump and Senate republicans are 100% sure that she will vote to overturn the Roe v. Wade decision on abortion rights, eliminate LGBT rights and same sex marriage and declare the Affordable Care Act unconstitutional and thereby eliminate the healthcare access that had been made available to millions of Americans in 2010.

They are in a hurry to have Judge Barrett confirmed because, should President Trump and the republicans win or lose the election, come November 3rd of this year, all of their dreams to take away the hard earned rights of “UnGodly Americans” can still come true.

While they continue to enjoy tax payer funded healthcare of their own: The absolute best access to doctors and drugs that our tax payer money has to offer.

Meanwhile, The President says that we, the people, should not fear Covid-19, better known as the coronavirus. In fact he suggests that we get it, like he did, and then get over it, like he is doing. “Don’t let it dominate you!” Says our President. “Don’t be afraid of it. You’re going to beat it. We have the best medical equipment. We have the best medicines, all developed recently,.”

That is if you are still eligible for that wonderful medical care after his new Supreme Court Justice helps to take it away come this November… following the election…of course! Why would he do it before the election? Duh.

But not to worry. Don’t fear the reaper! If you are lucky like our septuagenarian president you might feel better than ever after you’ve had the virus! You might even feel 20 years younger like he says he does now… Or there is a small chance that you may suffer from an insignificant…death!

So far only 218,000 Americans or about 1,000 Americans a day since March of this year have had the adverse reaction to Covid-19…as in an untimely death. Insignificant is the President’s word, not mine because that is what he called those deaths during one of his presidential pep rallies. That sure got his adoring crowd laughing and applauding.

And when he brought out a color coded chart to explain that if we didn’t count the “blue” states (we have red and blue states now) then hardly anyone has died from the Coronavirus! I guess, because people who live in blue states are extra insignificant? Even the Republicans too!? (those would be the red people living in the blue states)

I guess that if you didn’t vote for President Trump and/or you live in a state that didn’t give him the Electoral College votes he wanted in the last election then you can just die and go to hell…and apparently take everyone else who lives in that state along with you. (He’s an equal opportunity hater?)

But If the President is reelected and serves another 4 years, at 365,000 Coronavirus deaths per year, that would only be 1,825,000 Americans felled by the virus… and that would only be .5 percent of the 330 million Americans that we now have which is about as insignificant as the interest I get from the bank for the money I keep there.

So as far as Capitalism is concerned I guess we have to admit that we really don’t matter very much to our president and to our government since money rules and helping people drools…and as always the rich will get richer while the poor get sicker.

So I guess we should all just pretend that the Coronavirus is cancer or heart disease or obesity or whatever and go out there and live our lives with or without our masks. Maybe we’ll die from the virus…maybe we won’t, but it’s now 3rd on the list of things that kill us American’s the most…and you will die eventually anyway… so WTF?

And that’s the official policy of Our President, The White House and our United States’ government…not just something I’m making up…and if you’re waiting for a vaccine you might just want to move to a Red state and become a Republican (if you aren’t already in one or already are one) and get your instant immunity, and “heard mentality”…and don’t worry Democrats, I hear it rubs off on blue people too!

May God help us, Everyone!

How will we know?

10 Apr

Sunrise over a stadium

How will we know when this Corona virus crisis is over?

When will we be absolutely sure that it is safe to go out and about in public again?

When the politicians say so? When the doctors say so? When the Employers say so?

No. I believe that we will know when it is finally and truly safe again to run and play and shop and dine and congregate and mingle among one another when the athletes say so…and by that I mean when the PROFESSIONAL athletes say so.

Almost all of today’s professional athletes are millionaires and almost all of today’s professional sports team owners are billionaires and as such have access to their own professional doctors, lawyers, nutritionists, specialists of all kind and manner, and no doubt, medical test kits too! (of all kind and form… no doubt either)

No professional athlete will take to the field or court or rink or arena or stadium and jeopardize their livelihood, fame, fortune, family and health without the say so and approval of their entire entourage. And no owner will open his or herself up to class action lawsuits by exposing thousands of fans to their prized athletes (not to mention to one another) and become responsible for creating another pandemic… unless they are 100 % absolutely, positively, certifiably sure that it is safe to do so.

So when you hear the words “Play Ball!” and actually see the professionals playing ball then you will know that it’s safe to go “back in the water” or anywhere else that you want to go. Until then I say we’re all on our own as to what we want to do, or think we can do, even after the “authorities” give us the all clear.

So beware, be safe, Good luck and Godspeed to everyone! Keep your distance and protect yourself and loved ones as best you can. And big thanks to all of those who make the great sacrifice of caring for the stricken in hospitals and healthcare facilities around the country and thanks also to those who are still working in essential jobs on a daily basis while millions of us can only stay at home…and wait….and wait.

It’s a Man’s World

23 Jun

So, here’s a thought:

If a man has purchased health insurance through a government exchange and receives a prescription for his erectile dysfunction and then is able to impregnate a woman whom he otherwise would not have been able to, shouldn’t that woman have the right to an abortion paid for by the health insurance plan she obtained through her government exchange should she become pregnant and so desire one…or at least be guaranteed the right to birth control so she could have prevented what never could have been possible had the man not had his insurance coverage in the first place?

It’s All In the Head!

19 May

My best advice for education reform now and in the future is to take care of the children and simply this…”Parents and children of the world! Protect the head!

Forget about mandatory seat belts and car seats and bicycle helmets for young children. It’s too late by then. I say mandatory helmets for all newborns, not to be removed until the age of ten! We’ll have to develop some new age material that will be form fitting and fashionable of course and impervious to assault from small animals, siblings and adults who like to shake, shake, shake… shake their kids silly, but we can do it!

How did I arrive at this startling realization that the head is our most important teaching and learning tool? One day during class it occurred to me to ask one of my lower track freshmen classes, after a particularly hard day of trying to get them to understand the concept of sitting still, if perhaps any of them had ever suffered from head trauma as a young child? Blank stares filled the room and not one hand was raised. Briefly confused myself, I quickly realized my mistake and explained that trauma meant getting smacked upside the head.

That’s when every hand shot up into the air.

“Oh sure, said one boy, my brother hit me in the head with a baseball bat!”

“When did that happen?” I asked.

“Everyday when I was 6!” came his answer.

“Me too!” Said another boy, but it was my dad who hit me. Mom tried to protect me though. She said, hit him in the ass you idiot.”

“I fell down the stairs! Lots!” said a young girl.

“I fell out of the car.”

“I ran through the sliding door window!”

“I liked to hit myself with my shoes! Said another girl. That’s when I got my first pair of sneakers and went to the “Little Genius Academy”. I used to be a genius you know.”

And that’s when I knew I was on to something. All of my poorly performing, low achieving, attention demanding students had all suffered head trauma at an early age and some consistently! In every class, when I asked my students this question, almost always, all hands went up. It was their one common bond (besides being scatterbrained).

So I say this to all parents and children everywhere. Protect the head! At all times!  It’s the only one you’ve got and you’re going to need it every day!

A Dose of Reality

31 Dec

This just in! According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention Influenza levels in the U.S. have hit “epidemic” levels and are continuing to rise! So much for the Ebola frenzy and media scare from earlier this year even though Fox News still has their Ebola map and timeline updating live on their website with 19,570 cases worldwide. However, They even have an influenza outbreak map up now for the United States…it’s basically just a map of the U.S. colored completely red…because the flu, unlike Ebola, is everywhere! And can affect anywhere from 5 to 20% of the total U.S. population…annually!

Already this year the proportion of deaths reported in 122 American cities from flu and pneumonia so far has surpassed the typical level for late December at 6.8 percent which is the “epidemic threshold” set by the federal health agency. That means that 6.8% of all those who have the flu are dying from the flu…that’s some very sobering info when you consider that 3 people with Ebola had Americans running for cover and politicians calling for quarantines worldwide. On average, there are about 36,000 flu deaths per year in the United States alone!

The CDC has also warned that the H3N2 strain that’s circulating is linked to flu that’s more severe than usual, with already 10 times more cases this year than usual…and Health officials are also recommending people who catch the flu to ask their doctor for an antiviral, such as Tamiflu. But even antivirals can pose a risk for side effects according to the FDA.
So what to do? Well, for one, be careful out there! Stop worrying about sensational media driven diseases and worry about very real, unglamorous, and not very TV sexy diseases like the flu, which are with us everyday and everywhere and always have been. And take care of yourself and be mindful of others around you. Wash your hands, cough into your sleeves and stay home when you are feeling sick…and perhaps most importantly…when it comes to your health just remember to get real…and stay that way!

Gimme Shelter

4 Nov

So far the survival rate for Americans who have become infected with the Ebola virus is 100%. We’re 3 for 3! In Africa where the disease originated it’s fatal in about 50% of all cases. That’s one of the big the differences between living in a First World country and a Third World country.

Here in the United States, on this election eve, the Republicans are eager and hopeful of winning a majority in the Senate. And right now it looks as though they have a very good chance. It is important to note that One of the things they are promising to do, should they obtain the majority, is to pull out all of the stops in an effort to repeal the Affordable Care Act. At the very least their hope is to undo the law’s funding provisions through a special parliamentary process requiring only a simple 51-vote majority…without funding they hope to cripple the law’s ability to help people who don’t have enough money of their own to purchase health insurance. Why?

Because, as we all know, spending money on helping Americans to have better Healthcare is bad for the economy…or is it?

If you live in first world America then let’s be honest: You have little to fear from the Ebola virus…but if you live in third world America as 50 million fellow Americans do, then your potential future infection and survival of this deadly disease may just be…a vote away.

So, if you really are worried about the Ebola virus and about disease, pandemics and plagues, Please vote for health and not money this election day. Because in the long run voting for money may cost you and your family (1st, 2nd, 3rd world or not) more than you’ll ever know…and will that really be worth it?

Should Feeling OK Keep the Doctor Away?

9 Mar

I’ve always suspected this but thought that perhaps I was just too cynical for it to actually be true but…

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (2010 statistics) here are the leading causes of death in America:

      Number of deaths

  • Heart disease: 597,689
  • Cancer: 574,743
  • Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 138,080
  • Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 129,476
  • Accidents (unintentional injuries): 120,859
  • Alzheimer’s disease: 83,494
  • Diabetes: 69,071
  • Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis: 50,476
  • Influenza and Pneumonia: 50,097
  • Intentional self-harm (suicide): 38,364

So heart disease and Cancer are the 2 big causes of death in the USA But, consider this… a recent study in the Journal of Patient Safety, which is a follow up to a 2010 report from the Office of the Inspector General for Health and Human services, estimates that as many as 210,000 to 440,000 patients who go to the hospital for healing die each year as a result of preventable medical deaths.

This makes unintentional medical errors during… doctor’s, hospital’s, and nursing home’s attempts to care for and improve our health… the third-leading cause of death in the United States!

And that is just counting the deaths from preventable errors…and that’s if you count preventable errors as a disease…which of course we don’t…and I also just have to ask. What’s the word “preventable” doing in front of the word “errors”? Isn’t the word error enough? Adding the word preventable implies that the errors wouldn’t occur if we just stopped insisting on the service, test or exam that leads to the errors being made.

And then…If we also count everyone who is in someway made sicker by an error in the healthcare they receive ( An error is defined as an act that produces an adverse outcome compared to the natural progression of disease) then up to one million more patients experienced some type of preventable error, that leads to injury. (according to the U.S. Institute of Medicine)

It seems that the more expensive healthcare has become, the more doctors, hospitals and insurance companies have become eager and interested in offering services, tests and screening exams to healthy patients in efforts to get a jump on their “potential disease” before it manifests itself as an “actual disease” to the patient…unfortunately many of these preventive measures have proven to be ineffective at best and dangerous at their worst. Most insurance companies and especially Medicare, reimburse doctors and hospitals regardless of outcome. In fact, there are now even billing codes for specific errors.

So what’s a body to do… healthy or Un?

Sadly, and as in most things once they become unimaginably profitable, it becomes necessary to “Let the buyer beware!”

That phrase “caveat emptor” arises from the fact that buyers often have less information about the goods or service they are purchasing, while the seller has more information. Defects in the good or service may be hidden from the buyer, and only known to the seller. Thus, the buyer should beware.

In legal theory this is known as information asymmetry...sounds like a disease doesn’t it?

Are You a Ticking Time Bomb?

4 Mar
Here’s something new and interesting…perhaps…

There’s A new screening technology that can predict if you’re at high risk of dying… in five years — even if you appear perfectly healthy….and I used to think that appearing perfectly healthy counted for something but…

According to Finland’s Institute for Molecular Medicine researchers have discovered that certain biological markers are strong indicators of dying from any disease in the near future. Scientists screened blood samples from over 17 000 healthy people for more than 100 different bio-molecules. Then after following the volunteers for several years while looking for measures in the blood that could reflect who had died within the following five years, they were able to identify four biomarkers of death!

The researchers say that the bio-markers helped to detect individuals who were at a much higher risk of dying during the five-year follow-up and the results did not change even when only apparently healthy persons were examined. Now it is hoped that in the future these measures could be used to identify people who appear healthy, but in fact have serious underlying illnesses and guide them to proper treatment.

So the question is: If you felt perfectly fine and healthy would you want to take a test to find out if you had only 5 years to live? Talk about test anxiety! Would you want to know? Would you believe it if they told you or would the simple fact of knowing that your time might be running out (only 5 years!) make your time run out faster? And how would you know if the test was really accurate… or if perhaps your doctor (in an effort to drum up business)… ( would doctors do that?) was making it all up just so he could have another patient and sell you some medicine. I mean after all, you feel great!?

It reminds me of the joke where the man answers his phone and his doctor is calling. “I have bad news and terrible news”, says the doctor. “What?” says the man. “Well, Give me the bad news first I guess”. “Your recent tests revealed that you have 24 hours to live!” says the doctor. “24 hours to live???” replies the man…then what’s the terrible news?” To which the doctor replies, “I’ve been trying to reach you all day!”

Technology is improving in leaps and bounds so hold onto your seats ladies and gentlemen. From hear on in…It’s going to be a bumpy ride!
