Beyond Belief…

I usually like to watch the Republican rebuttal to the State of the Union Address but this year I missed it, so I have had to read about it. Once again I am completely stumped as to where the Republicans find their rebuttal-ists… and what planet they find them on.

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley gave this year’s Republican rebuttal and in it for some reason, she decided to make references to Donald trump and his proposed policy to ban all Muslims from entering the United States. Coming from a family of immigrants herself (who hasn’t?) she said:  “No one who is willing to work hard, abide by our laws, and love our traditions should ever feel unwelcome in this country.”

That makes sense. But then the next day, when asked to elaborate on her comment by reporters, she concluded:

“After all, when you’ve got immigrants who are coming here legally, we’ve never in the history of this country passed any laws or done anything based on race or religion. Let’s not start that now.”

Good grief! I’m wordless… Can anyone please tell me…Do Republicans go to school? Ever?

Not beyond high school, when it comes to the Trump camp. For the most part, according to some surveys.

I am astonished by the attitude that prevails ( apparently brain dead)

I would have thought that she would do okay with the rebuttal. I don’t think she’s stupid or ignorant. I think that Republicans live in an alternate universe where they are so self-focused that they don’t even prepare. What they say in rebuttals (I’m thinking of Jindal, Rubio and Haley) often doesn’t rebut. Which is why she got caught out trying to defend the indefensible. Granted, she sounded silly. And that’s what happens when you paint yourself into a corner. If she focused more on what President Obama actually said it would have been easier for her. Great post.

      “alternate universe” — exactly.

I thought the same exact thing when she made that comment the next day. Even two of my three kids (8th and 9th graders) stopped in their tracks and were like, “uhhhhhhh…..yeah”

    Yes, but they can’t learn.

I hear they are homeschooled. Does that count?
