A New Year’s Miracle

Barnegat Woman Arrested After Threatening Juveniles With Rifle

Amanda Ponzio

Charges: Julia Shields, 45, (photographed) is facing multiple charges for driving around shooting at people, leading a police chase, and pointing her gun at an officer Friday afternoon

Julia Shields

On December 26, 2014, Chattanooga Police Department Officials said that two victims were stopped at a stop sign when a woman, pulled up next to them in a dark colored sedan and fired a single round into their vehicle. The woman, Julia Shields, struck the radiator and disabled it. After that incident, police began to receive several calls about Ms. Shields pointing her weapon at people as she drove by. Officers were dispatched to try and find the armed, and dangerous, woman and as soon as Shields saw the cops, she fled the scene and sent police chasing after her, leading down several roads
where she continued to point her gun at other drivers as she drove by.

Then when finally cornered and stopped at an intersection she pointed her weapon at the officers…but Ms. Shield was taken into custody without incident or injury and has been charged with 3 counts of Attempted First Degree Murder, 7 counts of Aggravated Assault, Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of a Felony, Felony Evading Arrest, and Felony Reckless Endangerment…and most amazingly…she is still alive!

Meanwhile on December 17th in Barnegat, NJ, near my home town, police received several calls about a female subject standing in the middle of the road and waving a rifle at children while arguing with them over a basketball game they were playing outside her home. Multiple officers responded to the scene where they found Amanda Ponzio and…took her into custody… without incident. The investigation revealed that Ponzio had become engaged in a verbal dispute with the juveniles, then entered her Schooner Avenue home and returned with a Remington 597 rifle, which she then used to threaten the juveniles…but most amazingly…she is now still alive!

Two perpetrators with guns and not one shot fired…by the police! Do these policemen of New Jersey and Tennessee know something that the police in Missouri, Ohio, and New York don’t know? How were these policemen able to take into custody two would-be killers who actually had real guns, and pointed at them, without incident… when those other policemen couldn’t manage to apprehend unarmed perpetrators, one of them a child even, without killing them and without fearing for their own lives?

Was it a New Year’s miracle? Or…Were these two women just not fat and asthmatic enough to warrant the officers disdain? Maybe they just weren’t scary enough to strike fear into the arresting officers souls? Were they just not pointing their actual, real weapons in a menacing enough way to make those policemen fear for their lives? Did they not disrespect the officers enough by using the F word or other nasty words that make grown men cringe in fear? Or perhaps they didn’t act disrespectfully enough to the arresting officials to warrant lethal retaliation? Maybe they hadn’t already committed other crimes, like shoplifting and loitering, to make them seem deserving enough of a public death sentence?

Who knows? I sure as hell can’t figure it out. Can you? But I have learned one thing. It can be done! Officers of the law can apprehend criminals without incident and without deadly force…even in the face of real deadly force, not imagined. Kudos to these brave, courageous and extremely competent police heroes of New Jersey and Tennessee. If only they could teach other officers of the law throughout the United States what it is they know.

And what do you suppose that is?

“The Price of Freedom is Eternal Vigilance”

6 Jan

Thomas Jefferson said that. Was he correct?

Right before the new year, in Idaho, a 2-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed his mother after he reached into her purse while visiting the local  Wal-Mart and her concealed gun fired.

Mrs. Veronica Rutledge who had a concealed weapons permit in what is also an open carry state was shopping with her son and three other children, when the young boy who was left in a shopping cart, reached into his mother’s purse and grabbed a small-caliber handgun, which discharged one time.

Deputies who responded to the tragic scene commented: “It appears to be a pretty tragic accident,” In neighboring Washington state, a 3-year-old boy was seriously injured in November when he accidentally shot himself in the face in a home in Lake Stevens. In April, a 2-year-old boy apparently shot and killed his 11-year-old sister while they and their siblings played with a gun inside a Philadelphia home.

Over 30,000 citizens are killed by guns every year and There do not appear to be reliable national statistics about the number of accidental fatalities involving children handling guns, nor of those shot and killed by police officers, nor of suicides and other misadventures, and 2 years after the tragedy at Sandy Hook, Congress has still passed no significant legislation to help better regulate guns in our country…nor does it really even appear to be a pressing problem amongst legislators, media members, or moms and dads throughout America.

We live in a Democratic Republic where our well respected constitution defines our rights, one being the right to bear arms…and we as a country collectively bear about 300 million of them. We do it so proudly that in over 30 states we are allowed to show our right off, by openly carrying them. But now we also seek laws to allow us to conceal those guns so as to not appear too showy, I guess…or to perhaps “get the drop” on the bad guys that we know are out their, lurking, in the shadows…or in plain sight…and with their guns.

But is that really what we are so afraid of… here… in the Land of the Brave? Other people and their guns? Who is it who is out there who is so dangerous in the Wal-Marts of Idaho and Kansas and North Carolina that make us feel the need to carry guns in our pockets and purses? Do we have something other to fear but the fear of ourselves? Or don’t we?

“Tragedies happen”, we like to say…even when we say it about guns over 30,000 times each and every year. But that’s certainly not an apparent reason to limit our god given rights… and clearly to many members of our society it is the victims of gun violence’s own fault for wandering about in “gun free” zones…without guns…or for being so careless. People should know better…and yet still others say that we don’t have a gun problem at all in our country. What we have is a mental health problem!

I would certainly question the mental health of a populous of 300+ million people who own 300+ million guns…but that’s just me.

But alas, we are free after all, in a free country, and so as Mr. Jefferson once said so famously, we must remain vigilant lest we lose our freedoms!

And I believe, quite tragically, and in the end, it is going to be only ourselves who we must so vigilantly watch out for.

And Counting Still…

1 Jan

Happy New Year everyone and thank you for visiting my blog once again this year. There are 525,600 minutes in a year and in 2012, I crossed the 30 million mark in minutes spent on Earth

Actually as of midnight on December 31st, 2013, it was 30,823,200 minutes that I had spent on the planet…so that means that as of midnight of the 31st of December this year I will arrive at 31,348,800…but again, who’s counting? Still over 31 million minutes alive!? Is that an accomplishment or just something that breathing and waking up every day took care of for me? And why does it seem to have flown by so quickly…and keep accelerating all the time? Life in the fourth dimension took forever to move through when I was a child…

Anyway, thanks for reading and please keep reading if you will, unless you can thing of a better way to spend your minutes, but one does have to sit down and get a rest once in a while.

In any case, do your best to Spend your time wisely …it may be a crazy and unpredictable world but it still is the only world in town.

I’ll be approaching 32 million minutes by the end of this year and I will try to enjoy every minute of it!

Do your best to enjoy each and every one of your minutes too.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
