#3: The Top Ten Rules That Children Learn in School That May Handicap Their Future: #3

18 Nov

If you’re a parent or adult or teacher or perhaps all three. then you have probably already realized what it is that will wear kids out, and their chance for a bright and happy future,  faster than just simply growing older, just like it has most probably worn you out. The rules! And the fact that in adulthood where kids are going and where you’ve been, there are no rules.

The 3rd rule that children learn in school that may handicap their future…

3.      Be polite/do not insult others. “It’s not nice to hurt another person’s feelings!” Is a common refrain heard when an adult speaks to a child but when grown- ups join the business world or a political debate or negotiating session in the adult world, insults will become their finely crafted tools of the trade. Most will see your politeness as an invitation to help themselves to whatever it is that you have that they want.

Rule #4?…To be continued…

You’re right, of course, but I wonder: Is the problem teaching our children polite society or that society is overrun with bullies?

There is another option to this though: forceful resistance to bullies. This is something so old-fashioned that it seems rather quaint today, but I think of those old blak-and-white war films where honour, duty and being a gentleman were worth something and standing up to Hitler was quite like standing up tp a bully.

There is, of course, a fine line. Trust, but verify. Be polite, but keep your guard up.
