Some People Love America! It’s Just the People They Can’t Stand!

You just have to love this great American story:

HUNDREDS of protesters descended on the National Mall in our nation’s capital on Sunday to rally against the closing of war memorials across the country, during what was billed by Republicans as the MILLION VET MARCH on Washington…they were only about 999,000 and a few hundred short of there goal, but calling things what they are has not been one of the republican’s strong suits these days, since they were the ones who refused to support a resolution to fund the government, which shut down the government and closed the memorials in the first place.

Now, in the second place, Republicans are outraged that the government which they fought hard to shut down… has been shut down!

And wouldn’t you know that someone was nice enough to bring a Confederate flag to the rally…because nothing says I love America and its war veterans better than a Confederate flag.

Republican Senators Ted Cruz and Mike Lee and former governor Sarah Palin were in attendance to help lead the cries for freedom and neither the senators nor the champion of great American soccer moms everywhere seemed to be in the least bit disturbed that the Confederate flag was there also as they and the demonstrators pushed through barriers at the World War II Memorial, chanting “tear down these walls,” and singing God Bless America.

Because nothing says “freedom” or “God Bless America” better than a Confederate flag…does it?

Then they marched over to the White House, home of our President of these United States, who also happens to be the first African American president in the history of our country, where they chanted and waved the Confederate flag again.

Because what says “We all want to live in peace and harmony with freedom and justice for all” better than a Confederate flag?

Yes, who doesn’t miss the good old Confederacy?

A nation born of state’s rights! Because shouldn’t all people have the option to live in a state where they are free to choose between being part of a very rich and very small minority of free-market loving corporate owners or, if they so choose, become part of the much larger majority working class of the enslaved or dirt poor laborer, where they can forever enjoy poor working conditions, low or non existent wages, malnutrition and limited, if any, healthcare.

Because nothing says freedom of choice and equal rights for all, better than the Confederate flag…does it?

But of course one should also take note that In addition to war memorials, other federal activities such as the National Institutes of Health, our food banks, and Head Start programs, just to name a few, have been shut down. Eight hundred thousand federal employees have also been furloughed…and many many more will be furloughed in the near future and/or expected to continue to work…without pay, if the shut down continues.

 But that didn’t bother the protesters.

“Let government chill for a little bit.” said former governor Palin. And she continued by adding that a shutdown would allow the American people to realize “how irrelevant the federal government could and should be in our lives.”

And they did all this and they said all of these things while standing before our nation’s great memorials to soldiers who fought and died for our country because… what would say…

” that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion—that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain—that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”

better than a protest march at our nation’s memorials while waving the Confederate flag?

And don’t tell me that there was only one Confederate flag there…because one is all you need to get your message across…

    The presence of the Confederate flag is very telling beyond politics and what is happening in Washington. It speaks of Americans who live in the past, unwilling to change, unwilling to be open-minded, unwillling to accept others who don’t walk and talk and believe as they do. The ills of our country start in our own backyard, when we choose to become a loving, caring, accepting human population and stop listening to those who espouse hate, negativity and the symbolism of an era that was one of the worst in our history.

    There are always bad apples in every bunch, but at some point, we must curtail spending. Anyone who makes 50k a year, cannot spend 75k, and survive for long without going bankrupt. There is to much non-essential government waste. The current method of handling it sucks from both the Democrats and Republicans, but I think the point is clear, that America is close to a breaking point.

    Beautifully and powerfully written. The irony of these people, waving that flag, chanting USA!! and decrying the government while complaining that it was shut down by the very people they support.
    No one will ever be accused of overestimating the stupidity of the American electorate.

    There is a difference between incoherence and inconsistency. It’s an important difference. Incoherence is to believe that A and not-A exist for same set of circumstances, all things considered, and inconsistency is to believe that A sometimes exists and not-A sometimes exists for the same set of circumstances.

    For a long time it has been an example of gross incoherence to call this country the United States of America. Doing so would be to admit that the several states are appreciably different but are united by a common goal or purpose, that there are real substantive differences between the constituent parts of the several states and from the people themselves to the land. This is something that, despite certain regional differences that none would disagree with, people would tend to agree that no appreciable difference exists between the constituent parts of the several states in this current day and age.

    So why continue to act as if these differences exist if we don’t, ultimately, believe that such is the case? Why act as if A and not-A exist in this set of circumstances?

    The answer is not one that I would want to over-simplify but it seems to me that there is a very real problem with accepting reality. If we admit that notions of states rights in the strong sense are a problem because what under-girded such notions no longer applies, people would recognise that a significant part of the governmental framework would have to be completely torn down and re-done. This is something that I think a surprising number recognise but don’t want to enter into and from reasons ranging from laziness to a being seen as unpatriotic to pure commercial reasons.

    Ultimately, the United States of America cannot continue to exist as if it is really a set of United States and not, in effect, very large provinces of one utterly unified country. Strong notions of state’s rights are holding this country back and causing a wealth of problems. This, of course, is a simple gesturing to the issues but it seems to me important nonetheless.

    Just curious if you are a proponent to Obama Care? I am by no means a Republican but having read the bill in depth its pretty bad and not only raises the cost of healthcare 3 fold but if you dont pay the fee, you get charged up the yin yang. It also cuts down everyones working hours and seeing as we are in eternal debt, this bill isnt going to stimulate the economy. Its a very deceptive and money consuming bill. I do think its horrible that people are still waving confederate flags around though. Great writing though, very well spoken.
