Look Busy

What Did Jesus Christ Look Like?

I saw a great bumper sticker while driving down the road the other day and it read,

“Jesus is coming! Look busy!”

That pretty much sums up religion for me.

Many of us believe that there really is a God up there somewhere and he is the boss, but since we never see him around we just pretty much pay the boss lip service then goof around all day.

But how many of us are really doing his…or her…”work”?

And when I say “work” I know you know what I mean so don’t go pretending that you found the directions confusing or hard to understand or had the wrong manual or wrong edition etc…and that’s why you were doing the job all crazy like…

But of course no matter what we think or believe we all will expect to collect our paycheck in good standing when our time on the job comes to an end.

So…better look busy…

One never knows…does one?

Me too. Not only would Jesus not recognize fundamentalist Christians as his followers, he wouldn’t recognize what all of Christendome has made of him.

Let me tell you this story :
A friend of mine made up a story and told the story to 2nd graders about The Big Rabbit . The Big Rabbit was very friendly unless you didn’t believe in it . He told the story and forgot about it . An hour or so later the class went outside to play . One little girl stopped int he doorway , screeching . My friend was shocked ; didn’t know what was happening. When he asked the little girl what was the matter she said that she didn’t believe in the Big Rabbit and he would get her .
    That’s religion to me .

How about we do the right thing simply because the right thing is the right thing to do? How about we just worry about doing the little things right? How about we do those things, not as a grand gesture or to garner praise and rewards, but instead as the only gift we can leave to the world that will endure? How about we do the best that we can, knowing that we aren’t perfect, but knowing the judgement we most fear is in our own hearts. Yeah, what a stupid idea. I don’t know what came over me. Sorry.

Perhaps the meaning and depth of Jesus’ life, our life, is missed.Perhaps it became a “thing” instead of a lived understanding. Great post!
