Buy George!

2 Aug

Are there any other Yankee fans out there like me who miss George Steinbrenner? Because the wind is blowing like it’s 1965 again and these new look Yankees of 2013 look about as good as they’re going to get before 1970 gets here.

If you’re an old Yankee fan like me then  you understand my metaphor. Those late 60s Yankees wore the correct uniforms and played in the “house that Ruth built” but that was about all that they had in common with what had previously been a long standing tradition…going back 4 decades…of great Yankee teams playing championship baseball.

Finally George Steinbrenner appeared in the early 70’s and purchased the team, restoring sanity to the franchise, along with a new baseball tradition of purchasing  major league caliber ball players who could compete professionally and bring instant success to the team rather than having to go through the arduous process of developing major league talent in a farm system of hit or miss prospects.

It was new age capitalism applied to an age old pastime…and we Yankee fans loved it!

Sadly however, all that has changed now that mister Steinbrenner has passed away and left our beloved team to a family of cheapskates and penny pinchers. Word is out that these new owners will only accept players with expiring contracts and none who might be so expensive as to put their salary costs above the Major League Baseball luxury tax threshold for next year… and beyond.

And they are apparently doing all that they can to keep old A-Rod, arguably one of the best players in the history of their long and storied franchise, down on the farm until he either breaks, tears or pulls something else or is indicted by the feds on drug charges… just to save themselves from having to make good on the multimillion dollar bonanza they still owe him.

This is not Yankee baseball! Penny pinching? Keeping to a budget? Saving money? Avoiding taxes? It’s UN-Yankee! It’s UN-heard of! It’s UN-American! (well, all except for the part about avoiding taxes)

For crying out loud! 12 of their players are over 30 years old, with 7 over the age of 35 and 2 in their 40’s even! They’re contracts aren’t just expiring. They’re expiring! And that’s not the worst of it. Half of the rest of their players look like high school kids…and hit like them too. The other night, I swear, they had 3 batters who were not hitting above the Mendoza line…and it’s the end of July already!

And next year the Yankees brass has plans to spend less?

Attention shoppers…there’s a blue light special at first where we’ve rolled back the prices to 1969. And who’s that on second? What? I don’t know…third base!

Yes, I’m a spoiled Yankee fan, by George! And unfortunately for Yankees fans everywhere neither of Mr. Steinbrenner’s sons appear to be prodigal enough to carry on his great tradition of spend, spend, fire and spend.

So, it looks like the beginning of a long Yankee summer to be followed I fear by the winter of our Yankee discontent…

Welcome to the world of being a long-suffering SF Giants fan. Great leadership and fitting the right puzzle pieces together won two championships, certainly not open checkbooks.
