Luke! I Am Your Father

5 Feb

Just when you thought our government might finally be headed in the right direction, the Open Society Foundations releases a report revealing that,  The U.S. counterterrorism practice known as “extraordinary rendition”, in which suspects were quietly moved to secret prisons abroad and often tortured, involved the participation of  54 other nations.

Rendition, in law, is a transfer of persons from one jurisdiction to another  after legal proceedings and according to law. “Extraordinary rendition,” however, is a transfer which is extralegal. Extralegal means, “outside the law” or in other words, or rather words that everyone can understand,  illegal.

Our top secret program was widely expanded by the President Bush administration after the 9/11 attacks and although administration officials said that they never intentionally sent terrorism suspects abroad in order to be tortured, the countries where the prisoners seemed to end up like Egypt, Libya and Syria, among others, were known to utilize “coercive interrogation techniques.”

So Imagine our friends in Egypt, Libya and Syria (We have friends in Egypt, Libya and Syria?!) resorting to torturing prisoners that we send them. Who could ever have anticipated that?

Not to mention that it was in one of these extraordinarily renditioned camps where we learned from a tortured prisoner that Saddam Hussein had been training al Qaeda in biological and chemical warfare. Naturally this helped lead to the invasion of Iraq and later that most amusing video footage where President Bush is seen laughing about not being able to find any weapons of mass destruction in Iraq…or under his desk.

Some people will say anything when tortured! Excuse me, I mean, extra legally coerced.

But thankfully, following President Darth Vader’s tenure, a young Jedi knight was elected President and he pledged to end the U.S. government’s use of torture and issued an executive order closing the CIA’s secret prisons around the world…role credits…

But wait! President Obama did not fully end the practice of rendition. Instead, the administration said it was relying on the less certain “diplomatic assurances” of host countries that they would not torture suspects sent to them for pretrial detention…isn’t that exactly what happened in episode 1?!

And now, in the apparent sequel, NBC News is reporting that a Justice Department Memo has been obtained which states that The United States can target its own citizens with drone strikes if they have recently been involved in violent attacks.

Isn’t that always the way? Just when you think that the Death Star was built for other planets only, the empire announces that it can kill citizens with robots!

Mr. Vader, may I call you dad?

Things will become much worse in this country before they get better – as in the return of Christ.

Great article! I agree with you. God willing, I’m going to be 70 in a few days and, like it or not, Big Brother has arrived. What our government can do, has done and is doing to people [all over the world] is really scary. At least we still have our freedom of speech and prayer. I don’t want to even try to imagine how bad things must be in other countries. No doubt about it; I agree with John’s comment above, per the bible, things will get much worse before they’ll get better.

I just finished reading the DOJ memo on targeted killing of US citizens and there is no need to worry. It specifies that a citizen can only be killed when s/he is in imminent threat and capture is infeasible. An imminent threat is anybody who has or is suspected of planning attacks against the US even if no specific target or attack is identified because we don’t know if they are going to attack the US. Infeasible to capture is determined solely by the executive branch. And there is no judicial review what so ever.

But the President says it is ok so it must be ok…. right?

Obama and Bush are two sides of the same big government coin. I’m glad people are starting to wake up to that more and more.

As long as the vast majority of the people remain silent on the issue it will continue. The sad fact is that more people are likely to speak up in favour of it, thinking that it is all in the public’s good; that they are likely to be ‘safer’ if they turn a blind eye to this (and other) activity. Unfortunately any great power left unwatched and unfettered will, in the end, serve its own needs and not the needs it was created for.

    “…Capture is Infeasible..” –

Does that mean if you see a Drone, run real slow, so they know they can capture you and hence, won’t kill you? :>)

We really are living in very scary times. What upsets me the most is the total lack of public outcry. On the other hand, we are all abuzz about the power lapse at the Super Bowl.

Yes, unfortunately, the current White House resident does disappoint in some areas. Although, overall, it’s such a great relief to have Obama in office, the compromises he must make sometimes do not satisfy!
