Physical Education?

14 Nov

Why do we call it physical education? Just imagine what the world would be like if we actually had to be taught what arms and legs were for. Acquiring knowledge actually requires learning. Fine tuning our brain is an ongoing, life long process and well it should be. There are always new things to learn! (And some old things to UN-learn which when you think about it is learning too!) But what if we had to actually sit in a classroom with Physical Education teachers and study walking and talking, and listen to lectures about how to use our arms and legs, and read textbooks about how to go about basic bodily functions like waste disposal? Good god, can you imagine what our world would look, sound and smell like with a 30% drop out rate then…and a majority of the country in the 50th learning percentile? We’d all look like zombie Quasimodos on ice!

So thank goodness we don’t actually need physical education. Maybe there is a thing called evolution after all, because it had to take a pretty long time for our brains to learn how to coordinate and master all of those physical functions that seem to come so naturally to us by the end of our first 3 to 4 years of life.

Then we use those newly mastered bodily functions to get up and walk ourselves to school because our brains know that now it’s time to do some real learning. The kind that’s going to take another 14 to 20 years or so under close guidance and supervision. So for evolutions sake! Put on that helmet and protect your head. It’s mental education that we need, not physical education. What we need is physical exercise. Heck, isn’t that why we all called it gym?!
